What Fossils can you find at Barns Ness?

(Lithostrotion junceum) - 2007

Just to the West of the lighthouse, trace fossils of Rhizocorallium can be found, these are horizontal traces up to 50cm long. Zoophycos cauda-galli are the grazing traces of an unknown invertebrate and can also be found here. Other trace fossils including the U-shape vertical tubes of Diplocraterion. To the east of the lighthouse, the rocks are unfossiliferous.

Walking further West, in the middle of the small bay, rocks here yield brachipods of Eomarginifera, bivalves and triobites of Paladin eichwaldi. Crinoid plates of Parazeacrinites konincki can also be found.

Its not until you get to Catcraig/whitesands until you come across the best corals. Here a bed 25cm thick about 1m below the top of the limestone is full of the coral Koninckophyllum, and a whole bedding plain with the coral Lithostrotion junceum can be see exposed on the foreshore.
